Preheat oven to 350℉.
Blend together butter, 4 tbsp of sugar, vanilla, and salt in a bowl until combined well.
Sift flour into the butter mixture and blend with a fork until mixture forms a soft dough.
Shape dough into 9 inch roll.
Brush with one beaten egg.
Roll the dough in a mixture of remaining sugar and nutmeg.
Wrap airtight and chill for 2 hours.
Cut the dough into ¼ inch slices placing 1 inch apart on a lightly greased cookie sheet.
Split the second beaten egg in half and red food color to one half and green food color to the second half.
Brush the tops of cookies with red egg mixture and dip slivered almonds in green egg mixture.
Place two almonds on top of cookies in the shape of holly.
Bake for 12-15 minutes.
